Russian Team Dares New Manaslu Route Amidst Summit Crowds

2025-09-24

While most mountaineers are following the well-trodden path to the summit of Manaslu, a Russian climbing group is embarking on a distinctive and challenging expedition. Approximately seventy climbers reached the peak yesterday, with similar numbers anticipated in the coming days, including twenty-six from 8K Expeditions alone. This influx of commercial teams highlights a bustling summit season, yet one Russian team stands apart with an alternative objective.

Led by Andrey Vasiliev, the Russian contingent is pursuing a novel ascent up the formidable Southwest Face of Manaslu. After an initial acclimatization period and a planned second rotation to Camp 4, their focus will shift to this less-explored and perilous section of the mountain. Vasiliev acknowledges the significant risks involved, particularly the potential for avalanches on the snow-laden face. Should the conditions prove too hazardous for a new route, the team, comprising Vitaly Shipilov, Kirill Eizeman, Sergei Kondrashkin, and Natalia Beliankina, has a contingency plan to tackle the Messner (Tyrolean) route, which offers a safer passage by utilizing the west ridge.

This endeavor underscores the diverse motivations within the mountaineering community. While many seek the achievement of reaching the summit, a select few are driven by the spirit of exploration and the desire to forge new paths. This Russian team's journey on Manaslu is a testament to human courage, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of discovery in the world's most challenging environments, inspiring others to push boundaries and embrace the unknown, even when facing extreme conditions.
