Cazzanelli Conquers Kimshung After Years of Attempts

2025-10-23

After a decade of relentless ambition, Italian mountaineer Francois Cazzanelli has finally achieved a remarkable feat: the first ascent of the 6,781-meter Kimshung peak. This triumph follows three prior unsuccessful expeditions, demonstrating Cazzanelli's unwavering determination and resilience in the face of formidable challenges. His recent expedition, undertaken with a skilled team, culminated in a swift and successful ascent, solidifying his place in mountaineering history.

Mountaineering Milestones: Kimshung Conquered in a Day

On October 20, 2025, in the majestic Langtang National Park, nestled near the Tibetan border, a dedicated team of climbers, led by the tenacious Francois Cazzanelli, etched their names into the annals of mountaineering. Joining Cazzanelli were Giuseppe Vidoni, a companion from his previous attempts, and Austrian adventurers Benjamin Zoerer and Lukas Waldner. The ascent of Kimshung, also known as Tsangbu Ri, had been a long-held ambition for Cazzanelli, who had previously faced setbacks in 2015, 2016, and 2024. This time, their strategy was meticulous and their execution flawless. Setting out from a base elevation of 5,450 meters on the Kimshung Glacier, the quartet embarked on a grueling 1,300-meter climb up the northeast face. The route, characterized by its 60-degree steepness and graded AI4, M5 for its ice and mixed terrain, presented a significant technical challenge. Remarkably, the team reached the summit at 12:30 PM and had safely descended back to the valley by 7 PM, completing the entire journey in a single day. The expedition's success was deliberately kept under wraps until its conclusion, adding an element of quiet determination to their extraordinary achievement. Photographer Damiano Levati accompanied the team, capturing their historic climb.

This achievement serves as a powerful reminder of the human spirit's capacity for persistence and the pursuit of long-term goals. Cazzanelli's decade-long endeavor, marked by repeated attempts and eventual success, underscores the importance of unwavering dedication and careful planning in high-stakes environments. It highlights that true triumph often emerges not from immediate success, but from the lessons learned and resilience built through sustained effort. This ascent will undoubtedly inspire future generations of climbers to tackle their own 'unconquerable' peaks with courage and commitment.
