Hawaiian Airlines has announced the upcoming cessation of its direct service between Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu. This route, which commenced in 2019, held the distinction of being the longest domestic flight within the United States. Spanning an impressive 5,095 miles, the journey transported passengers to the Hawaiian islands in approximately 11 hours and 10 minutes. Passengers aboard the Airbus A330 aircraft enjoyed amenities such as personal entertainment systems and USB charging ports, ensuring a comfortable experience for such a substantial flight duration. These long-range aircraft were well-suited for the route, designed to handle journeys up to 17 hours, making the 11-hour trip a relatively routine operation for the airline.
The decision to discontinue the Boston-Honolulu service is part of a broader adjustment by Hawaiian Airlines, which includes the suspension of two other international routes: a tri-weekly flight between Honolulu and Fukuoka, Japan, and five weekly flights connecting Honolulu and Incheon, South Korea. These changes, set to take effect in November, are primarily attributed to a decline in demand following the pandemic. Joe Sprague, the CEO of Hawaiian Airlines, cited persistent challenges in post-pandemic travel demand from Asian markets, as well as in Boston, despite the airline's dedicated efforts to maintain these services.
With the impending retirement of the Boston-Honolulu route, American Airlines' service from Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) to Honolulu is poised to become the new longest nonstop domestic flight in the U.S. This route covers a distance of 4,243 miles and has a flight time of approximately 9 hours and 13 minutes. American Airlines will deploy its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft for this route, known for its efficiency and speed. The 234-seat configuration includes luxurious Flagship Business pods, premium economy, and standard economy seating options, catering to a range of passenger preferences.
The Chicago-Honolulu route, though temporarily suspended during the pandemic, is scheduled to resume in late October 2025. Its history spans several decades, characterized by intermittent suspensions and reintroductions, utilizing various aircraft types throughout its tenure. While these domestic long-haul flights are substantial, their durations remain considerably shorter than some of the world's most extended nonstop international flights, highlighting the scale of global air travel compared to domestic routes.
